Erica trained at art school in the 1980's, specialising in fashion illustration and journalism. She worked for many years as a graphic designer and illustrator.
For the last ten years she has worked extensively in polymer clay and acrylics to create scenes with colourful three dimensional quirky characters set against painted canvas backgrounds. Her work is shown in galleries across the UK and she undertakes commissions.
Her designs have appeared on a range of greetings cards featuring her humorous clay figures which are sold exclusively throughout the UK by a leading card manufacturer. Current projects include writing and illustrating children's picture books with the lively polymer clay personalities.
'When I pick up a lump of polymer clay for a new figure, I still get a little buzz of excitement. I love working in this amazing medium as it brings instant humor, colour and warmth in to my subjects. I can't help smiling as I create new characters and let them interact with each other on their painted backgrounds.
For me, the important things are bold use of colour, exciting ways of conveying form and figure and plenty of humor. I really admire the work of Beryl Cook, Anita Klein and Quentin Blake- they seem to achieve all these things effortlessly!
When people see my work, they will often smile or laugh, and want to touch the figures behind the glass. A lady recently told me that I 'breathed life into the clay' and I was delighted because this is exactly what my pictures are all about.'
