'I paint to communicate. My design experience has taught me that, however involved I may get with the production of artwork, one must never forget the viewer. Noticing something out there that engages me, I paint it. If someone looking at the work recognises what I've attempted to convey, then it's all been worthwhile- the spark has jumped the gap. That, I believe, is what all art is for.'
Educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Bury St Edmunds, Jon studied for three years at Ipswich School of Art. There he recieved a solid grounding in all forms of art activity, moving on to graduate in design at the London College of Printing in the the early 60s. The fine arts took a back seat for a while when Jon, whith a young family to support, worked as a graphic designer in London.
The onset of some sight problems at the age of 30 proved, in retrospect, a blessing in disguise. After some soul-searching, Jon decided to return to his first love- painting.
Now working mainly with pastel, he is a regular exhibitor at the Mall Galleries, Stark Gallery, and shows at fairs and galleries nationally. Commissions have included Wayford Manor, Downing Street and the Palace of Westminster. He was awarded the Pastel Society's Frank Herring Prize in 1998, The RBA's Edward Wesson prize in 2004 and has now been elected to membership of the Royal Society of British Artists.
