'Still Life: A moment's reflection to take in the beauty of everyday objects, symbols of lives lived'.
'In essence my paintings are a celebration of the ordinary; a tin table top, a cast iron pan, old butter knives, a found jug or a much loved cup. For me these everyday objects evoke memories of a past existence, a narrative to which I am intuitively drawn and compelled to explore through the medium of paint.'
Working without any preconceived idea of what the finished painting will be, the working process has many studies worked on at the same time. It might be the memory of an object, a particular shape or the idea of a collection of something that is the initial idea, but in process through to finished piece the paintings change, in a subconscious response to the application of paint and mark making.
Anji states
'If I exert too much control over the painting it becomes too contrived, but if I become involved in the building and layering it becomes more natural and forms itself.'
'I often incorporate written words into the images; maybe remembered conversations that occur to me whilst I am working, or phrases or sayings that somehow elevate an everyday moment into something more symbolic.'
